Although a recent survey stated baby boomers are more likely to donate, the results of this benchmark study by The Millennial Impact show the other side of the story. Learning how to attract and engage the Millennial generation will benefit you now and in the long run. For this study the Millennial generation is defined as anyone born between the years 1979 and 1994.

What can Millennials do for your charity fundraising?

They can and will share, share, share. 75% of Millennials like, retweet or share content on social media. Getting users to share about a cause is a major achievement for a nonprofit. “Sharing, in fact, is an indirect advocacy, in that it furthers education about the cause and draws other people to the issue”. (The Millennial Impact)

Not only that, but 52% said they would be interested in monthly giving. Generally, they can’t afford as much as older generations so asking for lower monthly donations may make it easier (For example, $10 a month instead of one payment of $120).

Millennials volunteer because they see it as a way to connect socially with like-minded people. 72% are interested in participating in a nonprofit young professional group. They want to network and gain professional expertise. Take advantage of that and it’s a win-win situation.

Getting this younger group involved with your organization now can help retain their support in the future.

How can you get Millennials on board?

  • Think mobile first
  • Make your site mobile-friendly
  • Get a mobile non-profit app
  • Send mobile-friendly emails
  • Ask for smaller donations
  • Stay active on social media
  • Post lots of pictures (Millennials are very visual)
  • Have a volunteer program

It is a fact that “mobile friendly is Millennial-friendly.” 83% of respondents said they own a smartphone. 80% use them to read emails and articles from nonprofits and 70% check Facebook.

Millennials biggest pet peeves are:

  • Trying to navigate non-mobile friendly sites (76%)
  • Finding some information missing or not available (65%)
  • Not being able to find details and contact information quickly (56%)

What will a mobile app do for my organization?

It will allow your donors to stay involved on their favorite platform. Millennials don’t just rely on websites anymore. They use the website to get information about the organization when they first learn about them and then they connect on social media to stay updated. By having a mobile app you can stay directly connected to your donor with push notifications, videos, pictures and an updated news feed. All of this will be easy to use on mobile devices and sharing and donating are as simple as pushing a button.
